Save time with Midjourney's Permutation Prompts
Permutation Prompts are a feature offered by Midjourney that allows you to rapidly generate a multitude of variations of an image prompt with just a single /imagine
command. This feature gives us the opportunity to create unique and exciting images based on a short text phrase, known as a prompt, which the Midjourney Bot interprets and turns into an image. It breaks down the words and phrases in a prompt into smaller pieces, comparing these to its training data to generate an image.
Let's imagine we're working on a project for a client who wants a colorful bird-themed design but can't decide on the color. Using the Permutation Prompts feature, we can provide the client with options like a red bird, a green bird, or a yellow bird, all with one prompt: /imagine a {red, green, yellow} bird. This approach saves us time and increases our efficiency.
What's more, this feature isn't just limited to text variations. It also allows us to create permutations involving any part of a Midjourney Prompt, including image prompts, parameters, or prompt weights. Say we're working on a social media campaign that requires different aspect ratios for each platform. We can easily generate images with different aspect ratios using a single command, like /imagine a naturalist illustration of a fruit salad --ar {3:2, 1:1, 2:3, 1:2}.
But that's not all! Permutation Prompts can also handle multiple and nested permutations. This means we can create more complex prompts involving multiple sets of options, like /imagine a {red, green} bird in the {jungle, desert} or even nested options like /imagine A {sculpture, painting} of a {seagull {on a pier, on a beach}, poodle {on a sofa, in a truck}}. The possibilities are endless!
Now, I know what you're thinking. What about commas in the options? Well, Midjourney has thought of that too. If you want to include a ,
within the curly brackets without it acting as a separator, just place a backslash \
directly before it.
The images are generated using Fast Mode by default, which strives to give you a GPU instantly. This is the highest-priority processing tier and uses your subscription's monthly GPU time. However, if we're not in a hurry, we can switch to Relax Mode, which queues the generation behind others based on system usage.
Remember, each variation created by a Permutation Prompt is treated as a separate Job by the Midjourney Bot, and each Job consumes GPU minutes. A Job is any action that uses the Midjourney Bot, including image generation, upscaling images, and creating image variations.
The significant advantage of using Midjourney's Permutation Prompts is the time efficiency. Being able to generate multiple variations of an image or a design with just a single command reduces the time spent on creating and processing individual tasks. This time efficiency can be especially beneficial when we're dealing with tight deadlines and when we're handling a high volume of tasks.
